Womens Self Defence Training in Worthing

My self defence methods are not just theories tested out on compliant training partners. They have been fully tested on the pavement arena for 15 years as a doorman, so I really do know what works and what doesn’t.

David Oakley is a specialists in Conflict Management, Personal Safety, Situational Awareness, Knives and Edged Weapons Awareness and Physical Intervention.

Absolutely the most valuable course my daughter and I have ever done. David was a complete professional and offered loads of practical stay safe advice as well as physical self protection. The self defence tuition is very hands on, and we were both exhausted afterwards but we both felt it was exactly what was needed. To defend yourself effectively you need to understand what it would be like to be restrained and to be able to free yourself from such holds. Fantastic value for money, very reasonably priced for such a valuable service. Both myself and my daughter (aged 19, who is going off backpacking alone for most of 2019) feel so much more empowered after David’s lesson. I wish we had done it years ago. A must for woman and young girls, especially those going travelling. We’ll definitely be back for another refresher lesson in the summer. Thank you!

WARNING this course is not for everyone, so I have just been informed, my last two clients told me it was emotionally and physically draining.

All I can say to that is, better to feel like that in a controlled training environment. When the NHS inoculate you with a vaccine against disease, its so your body is ready for when the real thing comes to get you. My training is based on installing emotional software into your brain so if it ever happens you can sill function effectively to get yourself out of a bad situation.

The Amygdala Hijack

Why people freeze when being attacked

The Amygdala is part of the Limbic system of the brain (commonly known as the reptilian brain) This part of your brain controls your survival instincts and activates your adrenaline dump into the body, your cognitive brain is your conscience. Think of the limbic system as your hard drive and the cognitive brain as the software to develop certain thought patterns and skillsets, the problem is when you are in a situation of extreme threat, physical and emotional, the Amygdala hijacks and shuts down the cognitive brain and activates your primal instincts, so basically you only have use of the Limbic system of your brain (the hard drive) when being sexually or violently attacked.
The little bit of cognitive thinking you have left will search the limbic system for a solution. Your survival instincts having kicked in will do whatever it takes will ensure your survival, if there is no solution within the Limbic system you will do nothing (freeze) because it has no experience in your data banks for a solution.
So, when you hear people asking why she didn’t fight back and do nothing when she was being raped, its because the only thing in her Limbic system memory banks was nothing. So that’s exactly what she did nothing. Her survival instincts told her doing nothing was her best chance of survival.
The only way to implant a solution into the Limbic system is to train to a real as possible real-life scenario, so that an emotional response is activated. An emotional response will cause an adrenaline dump and the two together will be like installing software into the sub-conscience mind (Limbic system) so when it happens for real when your survival instincts kick in, it has an experience/solution to draw on.

The course was excellent and just what I needed to help me regain my confidence and get into a better mindset. It was informative, physically challenging and realistic. I am so grateful for the knowledge David has given me in this course. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has been in a vulnerable situation or needs some realistic guidance and information about self defence. Thank you David, I wish I had completed the course sooner!

I attended a self defence class after an incident at work made me realise my lack of confidence in a conflict situation and how vulnerable I would be if faced with an assailant .
The training started with videos that reinforced the importance of avoiding conflict and how to improve your situational awareness.
David made me feel safe and comfortable throughout the class and is clearly very knowledgeable teaching self defence.
The movements I have learned through repetition were surprisingly easy to master and left me feeling exhilarated and empowered.
I would highly recommend this class to all women and hope my son who is regularly out all hours of the night would attend this as well.

David’s teaching style is straight to the point with scenarios made as life-like as possible. David is a very dedicated teacher who is clearly passionate about self-defence and imparting his knowledge and experience onto his students. In one session I picked up some very helpful tips and moves which hopefully I’ll never need, but feel more self-assured knowing I’m now more practiced in them.
