Conflict management and personal safety for schools and colleges

David is a qualified conflict management trainer, physical intervention trainer and qualified first aid trainer. He has worked in the security industry for over fifteen years and is considered one of the leading experts in Conflict Management. He has trained hundreds of people in conflict resolution for real life situations, drawing directly from his experience working in the security sector and internal security and surveillance officer for one of the UK’s largest casinos. David is also one of the few people who has been invited, and worked alongside New York’s ‘Guardian Angel’ group, specialising in diffusing high tension and violent situations in the Bronx NY city.

I have taught conflict management in education establishments around the UK and charity’s who have front-line staff working in the community.

When it come to teaching children and teenagers my message is simple. The best self defence is not to be there in the first place, or get engaged in a conflict situation. This course is to help children and teenagers understand the real realitys of getting into unnecessary arguments, fights, and the consequences that can come of it. There’s no such thing as knife defence, any other thinking is dangerous fantasy!

What is self defence?

Self defence is not martial arts training or boxing or any other fighting system or art form.

Self defence starts from the moment you leave the safety of your own home.

Self defence is about awareness of your surroundings and limiting your exposure to the danger of being attacked in the first place.

Self defence is preparing and being aware before you go out in social situations that there are people out there that are prepared to spike your drinks and offer you unclean drugs just to get what they want out of you.

Self defence is only used in a physical way when all other options have been exhausted.

I teach knife and edged weapons awareness not physical fighting, taking on someone with an edged weapon is the worst thing you can do in any situation. People who claim to teach knife defence are in my mind being very irresponsible and probably have no experience in being faced with one.

Self defence is 90% mental and 10% physical

When I teach children and teenagers any physical self defence it is purely to enable the intended victim to be able to breakaway and get to a place of safety. Anything more than this requires more intensive training over a period of time, and in the case of martial arts, many years before you can understand it enough to be a useful tool. This is why when I teach one and two day courses I concentrate on the mental aspect of self defence and a few very simple physical techniques to break free and get away.

Due to the increase in knife crime First Aid is now becoming a very important part of self defence. Knowing how to stem blood flow is valuable knowledge if you are a victim or helping a victim of knife crime.

Courses for Staff and teachers

As a teacher understanding the law and self defence, is a very important part of working in any education establishment working with young people.

When an aggressive or violent situation arises at work and you are faced with a potentially dangerous situation, knowing what you are and are not allowed to do, or even what you should do can be a daunting experience.

My conflict management courses are designed to give you all the skills you need to deal with the situation from an academic point of view.

I will also explain and help you understand in simple terms what you can and cant do in a physical way as regards the law and your own personal safety.
