Mind Body & Spirit
The Art of Karate
Chief instructor David Oakley
I have been studying karate and the martial arts since the age of thirteen. Wado Ryu karate was the first martial art, I then went on to practice Wing Chun, Judo, Jujitsu and Boxing. I also competed in Kickboxing in my early years. I have always been fascinated by the far Eastern culture and their fighting arts. Never being one to just accept what I was being told by my peers, I wanted to find out how effective the arts were in real situations. So I went and worked on the doors as a bouncer for 15 years. Over my time working on the doors I realised much of what I had learned worked but had to be applied in a more practical way. Wado Ryu Karate seemed the closest art form that worked in real situations.
My earliest memory I have of the benefits of learning Karate was the massive confidence boost it gave me in my later years at school, the bully’s and trouble makers sensed this new found confidence and stayed clear of me, with out me ever having to get into fights with them.
Learn to fight so you never have to.
My mission now is to pass on the knowledge of Karate and the martial arts I have learned over the last 40 years to as many children and adults who want to learn, so they might benefit all the advantages that martial arts training has given me over the years.
